Nico's Grave

The Grave
Nico's grave,
20th of August 2025

Nearly 29 years after publishing a little Nico page, I was in Berlin in the summer of 2025. While scanning for aspects to visit in Berlin, I remembered, that Nico was buried in Berlin. I learnt, that the city of Berlin will dissolve this cemetary in a couple of years, where Nico is buried. Therefore it was a now or never decision to go there, or not. And it was now!

Slight research told me, that I need to go to the cemetary "Friedhof Grunewald (Forst)". A small cemetary, initially dedicated to the not blessed, nameless or suicides, which is found in the north west of the Grunewald. For getting there by car, I recommend leaving the car at the public parking in "Straße am Schildhorn". By public transportation, bus stop "Havelweg" is even closer.

After taking a walk of about 10 minutes, you approach the gate of the cemetary:

There you are made aware, that boars are currently common, and that you are asked to keep the door of the cemetary closed. We make sure to do so. After entering through the gate and turning to the left, you face the sole building of the cemetary, which does not appear very ostentacious, but more functional, even though, the last time it was functional could have been a couple of decades ago.

Here, you can find a map of the cemetary, to locate a grave, when you know the number. In Nico's case, number 82 is the one. We need to follow the path to the third last row of graves.

Getting closer, one can see, that there are graves not very well maintained, but others are surprisingly new and/or well groomed. Nico's is in an intermediate state. Far from the junk status of Jim Morrisson's grave at Pere Lachaise in Paris. Only a couple of stones and one bouquet of flowers. Likely, not that many pilgrim's make it to Grunewald (Forst).

As I am not used to visiting graves, the scene was impressing me a lot. But different than the few cemetaries, that I've visited. Not the hustle like at Elvis' grave in Graceland. Not straight in the sun, as Johnny Cash's grave in Hendersonville. Not like the density of celebrity graves at the Zentralfriedhof in Vienna with graves of Beethoven, Franz Schubert, Curd Jürgens, Udo Jürgens and Hedy Lamarr. It is a modest grave in a small cemetary in the woods of Grunewald with no person around (not even the boars showed up).

We placed a white rose there to express our respect.

Nico,
may you rest in peace

Hopefully longer than 2038. The last burial happened there in 2018 and the graves are reserved for 20 years. There are no more burials admitted. So it could be, that the cemetary will be dissolved after 2038.
