Cosmic Psychos

The Cosmic Psychos are a punk band from Melbourne, Australia. They started in 1982 with Ross Knight (bass,), Bill Walsh (drums,) and Peter Jones (guitar) and a nameless singer. In 1985, the shouter was dismissed and they continued as a threesome. In 1990, Robbie Watts replaced Peter Jones on the guitar. Their first release came out in '85 and it was a 5-track-EP called Down on the Farm. The title might have to do with Ross' agricultural background: He still runs a farm 2 hours north of Melbourne, which he took over from his father. The EP was initially released on "Mr. Spaceman Records" in Australia. Next came their first full album called Cosmic Psychos ('87) that consists of 12 tracks. In 1989, the album titled Go the Hack was released on Survival in Australia and on Normal in Europe. In the USofA, the Psychos' releases were on Sub Pop. To document their live qualities, the Psychos recorded Slave to the Crave at a concert in Melbourne in 1990. Then, the guitar player changed, but the music remained. In 1991, they recorded the album Blokes you can trust over in America with a producer that was fairly good, but as well fairly unknown at that time: Butch "Nevermind" Vig. Their next release Palomino Pizza was not quite a full length album and contained three own new songs and four covers, e.g. L7's "Shove". The following years saw a record label change: Amphetamine Reptile was their new home in America as well as in Europe and Shock Records in Australia. The album Self totalled was the first result of that cooperation in 1995 and 1997 sees their next longplayer called Oh what a lovely Pie.

The Psychos toured Europe in September '97 and I was able to attend their gig at the Büchsenstadl in Ulm. It was the first time I saw the Psychos live. To my opinion, the concert could have lasted a little longer, the sound could have been better, but hey, it's the Psychos. It was a great experience after all. Their support band called "The Onyas" played half an hour of that pedal-to-the-metal-punk-rock: Fast, loud, great; not more, not less.

Again September, again the Psychos on tour: On the 8th of September 1998, the Cosmic Psychos played in Munichs Atomic Café. The Onyas were announced as support like last year, but they did not show up on stage. So the Psychos were the only band to rock the café. Despite the location was well filled, I would have expected somewhat more people in a city like Munich. As far as I know, the Psychos have no new album out (have they?!?) and so they played more classic Psychos stuff from earlier days like "Back in Town" (never heard such a fast version), "Pub", "Can't come in", "David Lee Roth", "Lost Cause" and "Hooray Fuck", but also some newer songs including "Whip me", "Neighbours", "Thanks Mum for the Rabbits", "Chainsaw" and "Guns away" (which one Ross introduced by the remarkable sentence "Guns are good"). After around one hour the Psychos took their break and sadly came back for only a few songs ending the show with their very own pants down greetings. One word about the audience: Mostly standing still (except for the tiger and his mate in the front row), some not even knowing who was on stage. I think this great band and the cool location deserved a more engaged audience.

2001 was nearly over, when Dropkick and the Psychos finally managed to release the double CD album 15 years, a million beers. At the end of 2000, a vinyl double album with the same title was released that contained a little less material. The album contains a collection of best, rest and rare songs of the Psychos. See track list below.

At the end of 2005, the Psychos went to the studio to record the new album Off ya Cruet! with a new drummer Dean Muller that replaced Bill Walsh. It is the first studio album since "Oh what a lovely Pie", nearly ten years ago. The album was released in 2006 on Timberyard Records and distributed by Shock Records. The album release was accompanied by the website of the Cosmic Psychos that can be found at: http://www.cosmicpsychos.com.

On July 1st 2006, Robbie "Rocket" Watts passed away following the gig at Bendingo, Australia. My deepest sympathy goes to his family and friends. R.I.P., mate!

After the shock about the tragic loss of Robbie Watts, it was an option to drop the brand "Cosmic Psychos", but Ross was overwhlemed by the grief and support of the fans, so he decided, with full support of Robbie's kids: "There's more beer to be drunk!" John Onya (from the Onyas) was chosen as the one to play the guitar as he has already been friend of the band for quite some time. First work of the new setup is an album called Dung Australia, recorded at the Birdland Studios and released on June 9th 2007 through Timberyard Records and available via Shock Records. Having not yet access to that album, from the tracklist I see that several tracks seem to be on the Dung Who flung album from 2001. The Psychos expresstheir will to go on ny a tour in Australia in June and July and according to Knighter, they have "16 sonds already written for a new album, which will hopefully happen later this year."

In 2007, South of France, near Spain, based Pitshark records released an European version of the "Off ya Cruet" album. They also announced to release the "Dung Australia" album in 2008, with an unreleased bonus song. To be released June / July 2008.

At the end of the year 2008, the Psychos are going to play some shows in Europe (see live dates). Amongst these gigs is a record release event for the new live album "Live at dB's", which was recorded in April/May of 2006, still with Robbie.
